Private Browsing on Safari Is disabled

If you notice that Private Browsing is being blocked via Safari when you're using Opal on your iOS device, please note that it's intended behaviour! Β The way this feature works is dependent on your OS version.

If your device is on iOS 18

Private Browsing on Safari can be blocked in a variety of situations on iOS 18, including:

  • If you are currently in a Session with a Block List that contains at least one blocked domain and has "Adult Blocking" toggled to "on": Opal will disable Private Browsing so you are unable to bypass our restrictions and access the site(s) you've blocked via Private Browsing. Additionally, while in Sessions with Adult Blocking enabled, you will be unable to tap the β€œClear History and Website Data” button via your Safari Settings. This will occur regardless of if you have "Adult Blocking" toggled to the on or off position.‍
  • If you are using our Allow List feature: If you utilize our Allow List feature, all Private Browsing and Adult Content will be blocked automatically, even if your specified browser is not blocked.

If you absolutely must access Private Browsing on iOS 18, you will need to end your Session.

If your device is on iOS 26

Private Browsing on Safari can be blocked in a variety of situations on iOS 26, including:

  • If you are currently in a Session with a Block List that contains at least one blocked domain with "Adult Blocking" toggled to "on": When Adult Blocking is enabled, some adult websites will be blocked on both Private tabs and normal tabs. The list of blocked websites is defined and maintained by Apple through its system-level web content filtering policies.‍
  • If you disable Adult Blocking in your Block List: Once "Adult Blocking" is toggled to off, the previously blocked adult websites will be unlocked.‍
  • If you are using our Allow List feature:If you utilise our Allow List feature, all Adult Content is blocked automatically, even if your specified browser is not blocked.

If you absolutely must access private browsing, you will need to end your Session.

That's it! If you are not currently in a Session or Allow List and your Private Browsing continues to be blocked, please let us know!
